The Real Reward Isn’t the Belt
The Real Reward Isn’t the Belt
This past weekend was a big one for DVG.
27 students earned new belts.
We also had 8 students compete at the Hawaii Triple Crown Tournament.
And to be honest, I wasn’t feeling my best.
I was nauseous and trying to push through the weekend.
But even with all of that going on, there were a few moments that really stood out to me.
One of them was watching the parents during our belt promotion ceremony.
I saw a lot of proud faces.
Not just because their kids got a new belt.
But because they’ve watched their kids grow.
They’ve seen the nervous first classes.
The days where their child didn’t feel like training.
The times they lost, got frustrated, or wanted to give up.
And then, day by day, they kept showing up.
A New Belt Is a Checkpoint
A new belt represents a checkpoint on a hike.
It’s a moment where we pause, look back, feel proud, and say:
“Wow… look how far I’ve come.”
But then we turn around and realize there’s still a lot more mountain to climb.
Not because we have to climb.
But because we get to climb.
We get to enjoy the climb while gaining greater access to ourselves.
And we get to discover who we’re capable of becoming.
Because the real reward isn’t the belt, medals, or achievements.
The real reward is who we become through the journey.
Growth Is One of Our Core Values at DVG
At DVG Jiu-Jitsu, one of our core values is Growth.
And growth doesn’t always happen quickly.
Sometimes it’s slow.
Sometimes it’s messy.
Sometimes it feels like we take two steps forward and one step back.
But that’s part of the process.
Jiu-Jitsu has a way of revealing things in us.
It reveals how we respond when things get hard.
It reveals how we handle frustration.
It reveals how we manage pressure.
It reveals whether we’re willing to keep showing up, even when progress feels slow.
Why Parents Feel So Proud
As a coach, I love watching students earn new belts.
But I also love watching the parents.
Because parents know the full story.
They know what it took for their child to get there.
They remember the first nervous class.
They remember the car rides when their child didn’t feel like going to practice.
They remember the tears and the losses.
They remember the moments their child wanted to quit.
And then they remember how their child kept going and the growth they experienced on the other side.
More Than Martial Arts
At DVG, we teach Jiu-Jitsu.
We teach self-defense.
We help kids build confidence, discipline, toughness, focus, and resilience.
But the deeper goal is not just to build better athletes.
It’s to help build better humans.
That’s what I hope our students and families take away from weekends like this.
Whether a student is earning a new belt, competing in a tournament, or just showing up to class on a hard day, the lesson is the same:
Keep climbing.
Keep growing.
Keep discovering who you are becoming.
Behind the Scenes at DVG
This week’s YouTube vlog captures a little piece of that journey.
You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at our team, our students, the belt promotions, the training, and the journey we’re on together.
Whether you’re already part of the DVG family or you’re still getting to know us, I hope it gives you a better feel for what we’re building here.
DVG is more than a Jiu-Jitsu academy.
It’s a place where kids learn to face pressure on purpose.
It’s a place where families celebrate growth together.
It’s a place where students are reminded that the mountain is worth climbing.
Looking for a place for your kids to train?
We have students joining us from all parts of the island such as Aiea, Halawa, Pearl City, Honolulu, Kaneohe, even as far as Waimanalo. We’d love to invite your child to try a class with us.
Your child does not need to be confident.
They do not need to be athletic.
They do not need previous martial arts experience.
They just need to take the first step.
Because at DVG, we’ll meet your child where they’re at, but we won’t let them stay there.
See you on the mats,
Coach Brandon
