Growth Isn’t Always Visible Right Away

One of my former students came back to class this past week after being away from Jiu-Jitsu for over a year.

Spending time with him on the mat made me really happy.

He started training with me when he was 10 years old in my parents’ garage toward the end of the pandemic.

He and his friend used to laugh so much during training that one day my dad walked by and joked:

“Are they training or just tickling each other?”

At the time, they didn’t take Jiu-Jitsu super seriously.

And honestly, I was okay with that.

I knew my job wasn’t to force growth.

My job was to meet them where they were at, make training a positive experience, and create an environment that would help them grow.

Because when kids enjoy the process, feel safe, feel challenged, and feel encouraged, growth happens as a byproduct.

The Seeds Were Being Planted

That once 10-year-old student is now 15 and wrestling for Castle High School.

He’s a beast physically.

He’s tougher, more confident, and more disciplined.

But what made me the proudest was seeing that he still carries the same humility and good heart.

After class, he told me:

“It feels really good to be back here.”

That meant a lot to me.

Growth Takes Time

Growth isn’t always visible day to day.

Sometimes the seeds being planted are invisible for years before they begin to show fruit.

As a coach, and as a parent, I understand wanting an immediate return on investment.

I’ve often asked myself:

“Is this really making a difference?”

"Are the lessons sticking?"

"Is the environment shaping them?"

"Are they actually becoming more confident, more resilient, more disciplined?"

But moments like this remind me that the consistency, the lessons, the environment, the encouragement, and the challenges do not just add up.

They compound.

And they matter way more than we often realize in the moment.

Why We Started DVG Jiu-Jitsu

This is why we started DVG Jiu-Jitsu in the first place.

Not just to build better athletes.

But to help build better humans.

Yes, we teach Jiu-Jitsu.

Yes, we teach self-defense.

Yes, we help kids become stronger, tougher, and more confident.

But the deeper goal is to create an environment where students are met where they are, but also encouraged and challenged to grow.

Every child is different.

Some kids walk in confident, others are nervous.

Some kids love competition, others just need a place where they feel like they belong.

Some kids take Jiu-Jitsu seriously right away, others need time to laugh, play, learn, build trust, and slowly grow into who they are becoming.

At DVG, we believe growth is a process.

And we are committed to that process.

Looking for Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Aiea?

If you are a parent looking for a place for your kids to learn Jiu-Jitsu we would love to invite your child to join us for a free trial class.

Your child does not need to be confident, athletic, or have any previous martial arts experience.

They just need to be willing to take the first step.

And if there’s one thing I can promise you, it’s this:

We’ll meet you where you’re at, but we won’t let you stay there.
