Why Community Matters at DVG Jiu-Jitsu

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Why Community Matters at DVG Jiu-Jitsu

A few years ago, I attended a marketing conference in Florida.

Picture thousands of entrepreneurs packed into one room.

Bright lights. Loud music. Speakers flying in from all over the world. Everyone was talking about growth, success, and building their dream life.

I was taking notes like crazy.

Every speaker seemed to drop another great lesson.

But at the end of one session, a speaker gave us an assignment that stuck with me.

He said:

“Get really clear on what you want… and then ask yourself why. Then ask why again. Go seven layers deep.”

So later that night, I went back to my hotel room.

Just me, my pen, and a notebook.

I started writing.

Why do I want success?

Why does any of this matter?

And before I even made it three layers deep, I got emotional.

Because earlier that day, as I sat in that huge room surrounded by thousands of people, I had looked to my left and then to my right.

Something was missing.

Actually, it wasn’t something.

It was someone.

My wife, Michelle.

I was surrounded by thousands of people, listening to incredible speakers, learning lessons that could help shape my future.

But the person I most wanted to share that moment with wasn’t sitting beside me.

When I flew home, I told her something I still believe today:

“I know I’m not always sure where we are going, or how we are going to get there… but I am 100% sure that I want to go on this journey with you.”

Since then, the way I think about success has changed.

Somewhere along the way, I used to believe the goal was to grow fast.

But now I believe the real goal is not just to go fast.

The real goal is to go far.

And the people who go the farthest usually are not the ones sprinting alone.

They are the ones surrounded by people they love.

People who encourage them.

Challenge them.

Laugh with them.

Cry with them.

And even help carry the load when life gets heavy.

Community Is One of Our Core Values at DVG Jiu-Jitsu

At DVG Jiu-Jitsu (Aiea, Hawaii), one of our core values is Community.

That is not just something we put on a wall because it sounds good.

It is something we want our students and families to experience.

Because Jiu-Jitsu is hard.

Growth is hard.

Learning how to stay calm under pressure is hard.

Building confidence, discipline, resilience, and character takes time.

And it is much easier to stay on the path when you are surrounded by people who want to see you win.

That is one of the reasons we care so much about creating a family-friendly environment at DVG.

Yes, we teach Jiu-Jitsu.

Yes, we teach self-defense.

Yes, we help our students build confidence, focus, discipline, and toughness.

But underneath all of that, we are also trying to build a place where families feel connected.

A place where kids are surrounded by positive role models.

A place where parents can see their children grow alongside other families who value character, effort, and continuous growth.

We are blessed to have students join us from all parts of the island. Families drive from Aiea, Halawa, Pearl City, Honolulu, Kaneohe, and even as far as Hau'ula and Waimanalo.

Regardless of what part of Oahu they live on, our goal is the same:

To help students grow on and off the mats.

More Than Just Martial Arts Classes

When a parent looks for a martial arts school, they are usually looking for more than just an activity.

They want their child to become more confident.

They want their child to learn discipline, handle challenges, build focus, respect, toughness, and resilience.

And they want to know their child is in an environment where they are cared for, challenged, and encouraged.

That is what we are about.

We are not just trying to create better athletes.

We are trying to help build calm, disciplined leaders.

Students who learn how to face pressure on purpose.

Students who understand that growth takes time.

Students who know they do not have to run from hard things.

They can run toward them.

A Lesson From DVG Beach Day

Yesterday, we had a DVG Beach Day.

Families came out, spent time together, laughed, played, and enjoyed being part of something bigger than just another class on the schedule.

As I looked around, I found myself thinking back to that hotel room in Florida.

The goals are great.

The accomplishments are great.

The growth is great.

But who you share it with matters even more.

Because when you look back, you don't just remember the wins.

You remember the people who were there with you.

You remember the friendships, the conversations, the moments your kids were laughing with their teammates.

You remember the community that helped make the journey meaningful.

That is why community matters so much to me as a coach.

And that is why it matters so much to us at DVG.

Going Far Together

There is an old saying:

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

That has become more and more true to me over the years.

Because in the end, nobody remembers the speed.

They remember the journey.

And they remember the people who were beside them along the way.
